Hard tack, or ship’s biscuit, is a kind of biscuit made of salt, water, and flour. It was an invaluable food on Peary’s Arctic missions, not for its taste (which is pretty terrible), but rather for its durability.  
The sample we have dates back to 1947 - doesn’t look too bad for a 65-year-old cracker!
